Turning Tales

2006; Dimensions variable; bamboo, video

The installation consisted mainly of 3 skeletal buildings made of bamboo sticks, and one video animation that sat underneath a bamboo building. This piece was made in Taipei, Taiwan reflecting the historical context between Taiwan and Japan, the country we were from. Those three buildings were 1. Presidential Palace that had been originally built by Japanese Colonial Government, 2. Chiang Kai-shek memorial hall in which the Abraham-Lincoln-like bronze statue of Chiang Kai-shek sat, and 3. Taipei 101, the tallest building in the world. The video animation shows the images items from today and the Japanese Colonial Period slowly mixed into each other.

Invited to Taipei Artist Village, Taiwan as artists in residence, we started researching the reminiscence of Japanese Colonial Period (1895-1945) especially with focuses on the photographic records and the buildings that had survived. This installation was our mid-point presentation of the research.
